TREE CRASHES, TRAPPING FAMILY IN APARTMENT OAK
BARELY MISSES MOTHER, 2 CHILDREN

A San Jose mother of two is counting her blessings today after a 10-ton oak tree crashed into her apartment early Tuesday morning, trapping her and her small children — but leaving them all miraculously unscathed. Sixty neighbors, however, were evacuated after the tree fell and were waiting today to hear when they could return to their apartment complex — ironically called The Oaks.
The black oak, believed to be between 100 and 200 years old and at least 60 feet tall, mysteriously split in two around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. It’s estimated the portion that slammed into The Oaks caused about $150,000 worth of damage to the complex, on Roundtable Drive in South San Jose.
It was that portion of the tree that precariously dangled just inches above the bed where Sran Sukwinder was sleeping with her two children, one 4 years old and the other 4 months, said Capt. Rob Piper, spokesman for the San Jose Fire Department.
”Had it fallen a few more inches . . . ” said Piper, his voice trailing off.
To extricate Sukwinder and her children, firefighters had to cut the legs off her bed to lower it enough so they could slide the trio out from underneath the tree.
All three were treated at Columbia San Jose Medical Center for bumps and bruises and later released. They’re ”the luckiest people in the world,” said Joe Love, who serves on the complex’s board. ”They didn’t get killed.”
Attempts to reach Sukwinder and her family were unsuccessful.
Several people who either owned a building in the complex or lived nearby said the tree had had a cable attached ”to hold it up.” Other trees in the complex still had cables attached to them Tuesday, and a complex manager said an arborist would be coming in to evaluate them.
By Tuesday afternoon, half the tree had been removed. Crews were scheduled to be working on the remaining portion of the tree most of today.
Neighbors gawked at the shattered scene Tuesday morning. One woman, who owns one of the buildings, said in awe, ”It’s unbelievable.”

Why the Ten Commandments Are on Our Trucks
There’s a story behind the writing on our trucks.
In the early days, as work began to pick up, Aly knelt and prayed before purchasing our first bucket truck. He asked God to make a way, and promised that if the door opened, he’d give public credit to the Lord. Since then, God has been faithful.
That’s why the Ten Commandments are displayed on our vehicles. They remind us every day of God’s guidance, our gratitude, and the promise we uphold. We’ve grown beyond what we imagined, and we never forget who brought us here.
We’d Be Honored to Serve You
